Our office, Promenade Center for Dentistry is very well trained in the area of implant dentistry. In conjunction with the dental surgeons we work with, we restore dental implants in our office all the time. This page will give you a background on what implants are, how they’re used, and what the process will entail.
What are dental implants?
Dental Implants are a replacement for a missing tooth. The actual implant itself is a root form made of titanium. They can be coated with special materials to enhance their biocompatibility with the bone in your mouth. Although dental implants have been around for many years, they have become more and more prevalent in the last 2 decades. Mainly because of advances in dental implants that allow them to be easier to place, easier to restore and have fewer post op complications.
How can they be used?
Dental Implants have opened the doors in dentistry. We used them in a wide variety of applications. The obvious is the single tooth implant. A single tooth implant has a lot of advantages over the traditional ways of replacing teeth [bridges and partials]. First, the teeth on either side are unaffected by the implant. Second, the implant helps maintain bone in the once empty space. Third, keeping a dental implant clean is easier than a bridge, since you can floss between them.
We can use a pair of implants to fabricate a bridge. The advantage to this is that we can keep costs down. Placing two implants is less costly than three. And there may be some factors that inhibit us from placing three implants in a row. Another use is to hold the dentures in place. Patients with dentures will undoubtedly sometimes experience a loose denture. And dentures do not have the same level of chewing effectiveness as our natural teeth. But with a few implants in place, we can lock the dentures either temporarily, or semi permanently (where the dentist can have access to the attachments and remove them at your cleaning appointments). When a denture is used in conjunction with implants we call them overdentures. They are becoming increasingly more common place. Upper dentures are usually relatively retentive compared to the lowers. So a popular place for patients to start with is having 2 or 3 or even more implants on the lower to hold in their lower dentures. Lastly, we are also using dental implants to act as Temporary Anchorage Devices in Orthodontics. What we could not accomplish in orthodontics before, can now be achieved.
What is the process like?
Generally for a single tooth. We will evaluate the area clinically and radiographically, and make sure that you’ll be a suitable candidate for an implant. Once that’s done, we’ll provide guidance to our surgeon on how and where we want the implant placed for optimal function and esthetics.
Once placed, you can expect a healing time of about 2-4 months before we can restore the implant. Although there are some situations where we can place a tooth on the implant immediately. To attach the tooth to the implant, we place an abutment. The abutment is the interface between the implant and the mouth. Most of the time the abutment is customized for optimal esthetics and function.
The process for attaching a denture to the implants is a little bit different. But you can read that on our overdenture page.
What are the dental implants like, once I get them?
Implants will feel very natural. I actually have one in the lower right! I don’t even know it’s there. There are no nerves in the implant so it will not experience sensitivity. You'll need to brush and floss the dental implant tooth just as you would any other teeth.
